St. Ignatius of Loyola

(1491-1556)

St. Francis Xavier

(1506-1552)

The powerful and influential Society of Jesus, explicitly supported by the King of France, Louis XIII, and other important personalities (some of them former students), managed to introduce two new saints for canonisation. Diplomatic efforts with the Pope bore fruit when both saints were given second place in the ceremony, to the detriment of the saint from Avila. The teaching work of the Society, as well as their importance as missionaries, spreading the word of Christ, tipped the balance.
